Interview: Kohei Murakami (Masato Kusaka / Kamen Rider Kaixa) → Reveals the Story of him becoming Actor for Kaixa
Interviewer - Were you able to appear in 555 because of Audition?
Kohei Murakami (Masato Kusaka / Kamen Rider Kaixa) Yes, but in the beginnign I took the Audition for Takumi Inui who transforms into Faiz. At the same time I had also took the Audition for Kyoryu Sentai Abaranger. Over there I fell in the Second Round and in 555 I fell in the Last Third Round.
If I remember properly, I think Kento Handa-kun who will be Takumi Inui was sitting next to me & on the other side leaving a person, it was Ken Mizorogi who will play Keitaro Kikuchi. After failing in the Audition & later watching On Air, I reacted "Ah, It was the person who was beside me!".
After that I didn't watch 555 but one day at the Agency there was a news that I got selected for the Role of Second Rider. I have heard that there was Audition for Kaixa but there wasn't any qualified person for this. Because of this there was an Appearance Request for me.
Interviewer - When Masato Kusaka first appeared for Takumi, Mari & Keitaro, he was an impeccable good man. He was depicted as Refreshing & Strong but as bad from inside. He knows when to show his surface & inner inside. Because of Kusaka, Takumi, Kiba & others got fiercely mad and their human relationships broke down. By playing such Kusaka, how did you hold yourself?
Kohei Murakami - The turning point for me to play such Kusaka was the line in Episode 16 → "Those who don't like me are blocking my way!". With that scene, I felt like I had stepped a step forward. It's also because of Director Tamura (Tamura Naoki). Over there he wouldn't go in legitimate way and crossed the line which he shouldn't.
Interviewer - Being the Hero to protect Humanity by fighting the Orphenoch, Kusaka's Personality is pretty Dirty. After the Broadcast, passing many years, he is still a character of popularity.
Kohei Murakami - As a reason for Kusaka to be loved by many fans may be that no matter how you talk about him, there is no end to his talk because of the depth. He is Justice? or Evil?. He could be viewed from any Viewpoint. His personality might be bad and he destroys the human relationship witht the surrounding but on the other hand, he had defeated Orphenoch more than anyone else. In short we can't say "He is such person". Such things gives a weightage to Kusaka.
Interviewer - You have friendly relationship with the 555's All Episode & Movie's Screen Writer Toshiki Inoue since then and even now. What would you talk with Inoue-san during those days.
Kohei Murakami - I still properly remember when I first met him. Inoue-san told me "Sorry but I am better at playing Masato Kusaka". I still remember that. Inoue-san says that he writes the lines of all characters after playing it himself. If we listen to that, we will feel regrettable as a Actor so when playing Kusaka, I would play thinking "I will surpass Toshiki Inoue". In the end he told me "It was good that your were Kusaka". I was happy with that.
Interviewer - We have heard that Inoue-san himself likes the character Kusaka more than anybody even being the character who messes up the story.
Kohei Murakami - During those days it was really a joy to receive the script. It was the content which would surpass our predictions. I was allowed to write the Post Script for the Inoue-san's Novel "Kamen Rider Faiz Biography: Various Flowers". I had mailed him why Kusaka always uses Wet Tissues by imaging on my own. I asking him shouldn't it be liked? & he replied "It's pretty Near". It became the trigger to be friendly with Inoue-san.
555 is a Continous Series of One year but the actors who play it doesn't know what will happen in the future just by having the current conditions. So something like this happens in the future, we were acting deeply with meaning while expecting this to happen. It was a battle against Inoue-san who is currently thinking the future plot. Based on my acting there was also possibility of changing the Future Story. So things were a reward as an actor.
Interviewer - In the Last Episode, Inoue-san made a Special Appearance as the Construction Foreman. There could be extraodinary feelings for 555 for him.
Kohei Murakami - That Finale was good. I had already finished my filming but I had went to see Inoue-san's Acting with others (laughs). These days I have drinks with him at Home or go for lunch. He had extraordinary feelings for cooking and he is good at it. I had also learnt cooking from him. Once I tried to make Fried Rice at Inoue-san's House but it didn't go good. He taught he how to use the Chinese Hotpot till how to technique of pattering Rice. He taught me everything. Since then Fried Rice became my special dish. (laughs)
Interviewer - There are many famous Dialogues for Kusaka. Among the dialogues which are recorded in this time's CSM KAIXAGEAR, which is the one you like the most?
Kohei Murakami - Yes. There are many but if I were to select three then it would be "Who don't like me are blocking my way" from Episode 16. It is the line which represents Kusaka. Even if anyone wants to say this once they can't likely say this (laughs). In other words he is a Anti-Hero. A dialogue that perfectly fits Kusaka.
Next is from Episode 37 which is told to Inui. "I have heard that you wanted to die. I am different from Kiba. I will do as you please!". In the script the last part was supposed to be "I won't go easy" but because of my Idea it changed to "I will do as you Please". This was the only part where Inoue-san's Screenplay was changed.
Then in the scene from the battle after this, Kusaka is heard screaming "This Monster!!". This was my ad lib. Then in Episode 30, while smiling at Sawada (Spider Orphenoch) and saying "Then, I let you die...". I have deep feelings for this. It was fun to do serious acting with Gou Ayano who had played Sawada. Those expressions of Kusaka seen at that time were going good. I have contact with Ayano-kun even now. Sometime back I requested him through mail to give a Message for the event 913 (Kaixa) Festival but sent me a Video Message. I was happy with that!
Interviewer - It's been 10 years & more after those days. How do you feel after watching the video from those days?
Kohei Murakami - There are lot of bad parts and also feel of doing it the first time. Acting isn't just Art but also the taste which could be done only at that time. If current me plays Kusaka of that time, people would say "Something's wrong" (laughs). Those initial feelings and unknowness is together Kusaka. That figure in the video who is working hard is "Youth". Such things could be expressed only by me of that time.
Interviewer - Last year you have appeared in Doubutsu Sentai Kyuranger as Zyuoh Bird / Bud who would save the Hero. You have appeared in Tokusatsu Program after a long time and as a Semi Regular. What is your impression on Young Hero Actors?
Kohei Murakami - Bud was an interesting character. Each time as the episode moves forward he would said "It's not good if you will Transform more than this", "Your body is no longer stable" & I felt like "Eh? I think I have heard these lines before" (laughs). I was happy after hearing from Zyuohger Actors that they used to watch 555 during their childhood. Even in my childhood, I was watching Dai Sentai Goggle V, Space Sheriff Gavan, Kagaku Sentai Dynaman and more.
The person who was watching Hero in childhood grew up and became a Hero. Children who were seeing it will turn into a Hero...It made me feel like thinking about the longest history till now and the upcoming future. Children who have watched Zyuohger, there would a child who will be born as a New Hero. Now every year I would do an event called 913 (Kaixa) Festival. The audiences aren't only Adults fans but the children who were watching 555 and grew up to become an adult. Heisei Rider is continuing as a Series & these days Tokusatsu Works have become a culture.
